Sharon Damisa |
We'll do love to know you take on drugs abuse and child abuse,
But before then, we'll do want you to tell us a little about yourself
Sharonn: Ok
I'm Sharon Damisa..
A 3rd year medical student of Ahmadu Bello University.
Gibsblog: Wow that's great
So may we know From which state?
Sharonn: Yea,
I'm from Kogi State, Okene LGA..
Ebira by tribe.
Gibsblog: Oh that's great so you're my in-law
Sharonn : Smiles...
That's good to hear
Gibsblog: Alright Sharon can you tell us what you understand or let me say what comes to your mind anytime you hear the word child abuse?
Sharonn: For me,
Child abuse would mean any form of molestation of a child.
Could be Sexual harassment, intentional infringement of rights or deprivation of basic amenities.
Gibsblog: Yes, so what do you think the government should do to reduce or curb the rate at which a child is being abused especially here in Nigeria
Sharonn : Strict laws on Child abuse should be enacted..
With penalties for breaking such laws
Laws like:
Ensuring every child gets quality education.
And if not quality education, should at least be engaged in something productive.
Ensure Violence-free homes.
Organize seminars for parents and guardians on how Children should be handled and taken care of.
Ensure Parents don't go out of line in terms of training their Children, with regards to discipline.
Gibsblog: That's good sharon
Now how do you help a child that is already a victim of any form of abuse
How do you help that child regain he or her confidence
Sharonn : Okayy
Such a Child should probably see a certified psychologist..
But in the absence of such..
The Child should be spoken to..
Communicate and Listen to such a Child.
Show him/her real love..
Create a safe space for the child..
Make available to them some of those things they've been deprived of.
Communication is key.
In depth Communication will help you navigate and know how best to help such a Child.
Gibsblog: Thank you very much Sharon,I like that "communication"
Now to drugs abuse
What's your take on drugs abuse
Sharonn: Okayyy
Drugs Abuse is use of any kind of drug, for whatsoever reason without a Doctor's prescription.
We all as Nigerians are guilty of this
And it can be detrimental to our health
Yes the use of drugs without the doctor's prescription
But the kind that's really bad and has no positive sides to it, is Substance abuse..
Its the kind where people take in different kind of substances for the sake of hiding away from some problem or trying to forget something that's bothering you.
Gibsblog: So Sharon how do you help a friend that you know do abuse drugs but can't help he or herself
Sharonn: Firstly, you should identify the root of the problem..
Why did such a person resort to drug abuse?
Is it peer pressure, an underlying family issue and what not?
That way you can help better..
Also, we should understand that such a friend doesn't necessarily see it as abuse, he might have found sort of an escape for his problem and to help him out of it, you should be able to convince them into understanding that its a serious issue.
Thirdly, you shouldn't judge them or guilt-trip them..
Make them feel loved and show them you actually care.
Be positive and let such a Friend know that he/she can get out of it.
Gibsblog: What's your advice to the government to help reduce the rate of drugs abuse among youths
Sharonn: Okayy
Government should provide more stable jobs for youths.
It can help reduce the rate..
Should organize sound enlightenment programs about the dangers of drug abuse..
Should create counselling and rehabilitation centres.
Gibsblog: Thank you very much Sharon for your time
Gibsblog appreciates you
Sharonn: You're welcome
Thanks for having me
