BOOK REVIEW: THE SECRET LIVES OF BABA SEGI’S WIVES

I know I’ve been away for too long. u miss me yh? am back now. hope am consistent tho. anyways, today, am doing a book review by our fellow Nigerian; LOLA SHONEYIN. it’s titled: The secret lives of baba segi’s wives. hope you enjoy it.

PLOT SUMMARY

So, Baba Segi is a middle aged business man who has three wives and nine children. to every normal person, he’s over comfortable. however, he isn’t satisfied and he decides to take a fourth wife’; an educated one whereas the first four are not so educated.
Baba Segi’s first and second wives do not like this new wife and do everything within their power to frustrate her. to worsen her case, it seems the gods have shut her womb as she has put all Baba Segi’s seeds to waste(she doesn’t get pregnant). her husband takes her to different herbalists and she takes all sorts of concoctions, all to no avail. a friend of his then advises him to try a hospital as Baba Segi hates hospitals. he agrees and there it is discovered hat Baba Segi’s sperm cells are not capable of making children! this leaves us wondering as to how he has nine children!
at this point, the truth is out.Iya Segi, the first wife has four kids owned by Baba Segi’s driver. the second wife has three kids owned by a popular meat seller in the market while the third wife has three kids owned by a long time lover! however, no one is bold enough to tell Baba Segi all these, all he knows now is that these kids aren’t his.
due to the hatred Iya Segi and the third wife have for the new wife, they didn’t let her in to the secret that their husband is impotent which is the reason she could n”t give him a child. if they had told her, maybe the secret wouldn’t have been out yet!
the driver, out of fear, runs away while Segi, the first born of the house dies due to the poison she ate which was aimed at the new wife. how karma deals with us ehn!
in a nutshell, all the children in the household are not his, so Baba Segi has no choice than to accept his fate and keep taking care of them as his according to the plea of the wives. the last wife leaves his house in hope for a better life, at least, she still be young girl and she still has her sanity despite all she went through in his house.

whoo! dú know how hard it is to summarise over a 100 paged book as short as that? anyways you got the gist. baba segis na okobo(impotent man), yet he flenjo everywhere.
moral of the story: one wife, one trouble. stick to one woman, at least, e for no pain baba segi reach like this if na only one wife e get. besides that education is necessary! if he was educated during one of his checkups, he would have been told about his problem and he would have known how to handle it.
Nigerians are trying. pls start reading Nigerian!
